As coisas não estão nada fáceis para a Georgina! Depois de o pai desaparecer sem deixar rasto, a sua família foi despejada do apartamento onde morava e obrigada a viver no carro. Agora, enquanto a mãe se desdobra entre dois empregos para ganhar dinheiro suficiente para uma casa nova, a Georgina tem de cuidar do irmão mais novo, o Toby.

Mas a Georgina recusa-se a ficar de braços cruzados e sente que tem de fazer alguma coisa para ajudar a mãe.

Quando vê um velho cartaz a oferecer uma recompensa por um cão perdido, tem uma ideia genial: ela só precisa de encontrar um cão com donos ricos, «pedi-lo emprestado» e aparecer para receber o dinheiro da recompensa. Num plano tão simples e perfeito, o que é que pode correr mal?

A Charlie acaba de se mudar para a casa dos tios numa cidade do interior. Com apenas 11 anos, ela precisa agora de se adaptar a uma nova realidade.

Um dia, vê um cão esfomeado e sente uma ligação imediata com ele. Encantada e completamente derretida, dá-lhe o nome de Osso da Sorte e toma uma decisão: aquele cão há de ser seu!

Com a preciosa ajuda dos tios e do seu novo amigo Howard, a Charlie arranja um plano para apanhar o Osso da Sorte e embarca, mesmo sem saber, numa grande aventura. Ela está prestes a reencontrar a alegria e a redescobrir o lado maravilhoso da vida.

Books help us slow down

I’m in a hurry! ... I don’t have time! ... Good-bye! ... We hear words like that almost every day, not only in Lithuania, which is in the very centre of Europe, but in many other places of the world. No less frequently do we hear that we live in the age of information overload, haste and rush.

But if you take a book into your hands, you immediately feel a change. It seems that books have this wonderful quality – they help us slow down. As soon as you open a book and delve into its tranquil depths, you no longer fear that things will whizz by at a maddening speed while you see nothing. All of a sudden, you come to believe you don’t have to dash off like a bat out of hell to do some urgent work of little importance. In books, things happen quietly and in a precisely arranged order. Maybe because their pages are numbered, maybe because the pages rustle gently and soothingly as you leaf through them. In books, events of the past calmly meet events that are yet to come.

The universe of a book is wide open; it happily fuses reality with imagination and fantasy. And sometimes you wonder if it was in a book or in life that you noticed how beautifully the drops of thawing snow drip from the roof, or how pleasing to the eye is the neighbour’s wall overgrown with moss. Do you know from a book or from reality that rowan berries are not only beautiful, but also bitter? Was it in a book or in reality that you were lying in the summer grass, or sitting with your legs crossed, watching clouds sail across the sky?

Books help us not to rush, books teach us to notice things, and books invite us or even make us sit down for a while. We usually read sitting, with a book on our desk or in our hands, don’t we?

And haven’t you experienced another miracle – that when you read a book, the book reads you?Yes, of course, books can read. They read your forehead, eyebrows, the corners of your lips as they rise and fall, but, first and foremost, books read your eyes. And looking into your eyes, they see... Well, you know what!

I am sure that books are never bored when they are in your hands. Someone who enjoys reading – be it a child or adult – is much more interesting than someone who doesn’t care for books, who is always racing against the clock, who never has time to sit down, who fails to notice much of what surrounds them.

On the International Childrenʼs Book Day, my wish to all of us is:
Let there be interesting books for readers and interesting readers for books!

The small is big in a book

People are inclined toward rhythm and regularity, just as magnetic energy organizes metal shavings in a physics experiment, just as a snowflake creates crystals out of water. In a fairy tale or poem, children enjoy repetition, refrains, and universal motifs because they can be recognized anew each time – they bring regularity to a text. The world gains a beautiful order. I still remember how as a child I struggled with myself over justice and symmetry, over equal rights for the left and the right: if I tapped a beat on the table, I counted how many times each finger got to play, so that the other ones wouldn’t be offended. I tended to applaud by patting my right hand with the left, but then I thought that it was unfair and learned to do it the other way – left on right. This instinctive aspiration for balance is funny, of course, but it shows the need to prevent the world from becoming lopsided. I had the feeling that I was the one who was responsible for the balance of it all.

Children's inclination toward poems and stories likewise stems from their need to bring regularity to the chaos of the world. From indeterminacy, everything tends toward order. Nursery rhymes, folk songs, games, fairy tales, poetry – all these rhythmically organized forms of existence help small people structure their presence in the greater chaos. They create an instinctual awareness that order is possible in the world and everyone has his or her unique place in it. Everything works toward this goal: the rhythmic organization of the text, the rows of letters and the design of the page, the impression of the book as a well-structured whole. The great is revealed in the small and we model this in children's books even if we are not thinking about God or fractals. A children's book is a miraculous force that promotes the small person's great desire and ability to be. It promotes his or her courage to live.

In a book, the small is always big, instantly, not just upon reaching adulthood. A book is a mystery in which something unsought can be found, or something beyond one’s reach. That which readers of a certain age cannot grasp with their minds remains in their awareness as an imprint and continues to act even if not thoroughly understood. A picture book can function as a treasure chest of wisdom and culture even for adults, just as children can read a book intended for adults and find their own story, a hint about their budding lives. Cultural context shapes people, laying down the bed for impressions that will arrive in the future, as well as for the trying experiences they will have to survive while keeping themselves whole.

A children's book signifies respect for the greatness of the small.  It signifies a world that is created anew each time, a playful and beautiful seriousness, without which everything, including children's literature, is just empty busywork. 

In short:

A book makes the small person intuit that order is possible in the world, and everyone has a unique place in it. Everything works toward this goal: the rhythmic organization of the text, the rows of letters, the design of the page, the impression of the book as a well-structured whole. The great is revealed in the small and we model it in children's books. A book is a mystery in which something unsought can be found, or something beyond one’s reach.  A children's book signifies respect for the greatness of the small.
